The Gaming Giant Recruits Apex Legends Lead to Rescue Struggling Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Shift Comes After Poor Feedback

The new appointee steps into the role of studio head at the development studio following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing initial reveal last autumn.

Recently, 2K president a key figure notified staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had revealed the requirement for a distinct direction.

Ismailer stated that the developers is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed approach, aiming to address player expectations.

Trend of Key Acquisitions

The news echoes a similar step taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the full message from Ismailer's announcement:

Team—

I understand you all just finished your meeting - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and talented developers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re eager for that collaboration to continue.”

Through your commitment and adaptability, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s the game playtest was revealing. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the necessity for a more distinct vision.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the input to heart and revamped Project ETHOS with a revitalized direction - one that’s poised to achieve its potential to our players.

The belief in Project ETHOS increases every day. To advance the incredible advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome the new hire as the latest Director of the team. After a period of discussions, Ben starts with us on next week.

Ben’s management and experience in the PVP shooter space is vast, having spent the recent years developing and overseeing some of the most recognizable series in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.

Please join me in receiving him soon. We are all looking forward to keep witnessing the progress of the game in the time to ahead.

The President

Experience of the New Leader

Brinkman previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, prior to that, had assignments at other industry leaders.

Title Information and Concept

Project Ethos was revealed in last year together with a public demo. Initially, 31st Union described the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the game's pitch reads. "Take on the competition with unique powers, risks, and tests that shift every round. Do you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively aim high, gamble everything, and trust your squad can achieve the highest spot? The option is up to you."

The game does not have an official debut schedule or platforms, but players can look forward to additional details as production continues.
